How did Art Haven start?
David Brooks and his sister Sarah noticed a need for affordable art classes in the Gloucester area and began making plans for Art Haven in January 2008. They found a landlord who believed in their cause and received a tremendous amount of support from the local community, enabling them to open their doors to the public on July 31, 2008. It's only with the amazing support of the community that this idea has been able to come to fruition.
Who is David Brooks?
David Brooks has grown up in the Gloucester community. After spending a semester as a Physics major at Gordon College, he had the idea for Art Haven and set his plans into motion. He grew up doing both sports and art, but was most deeply affected by the art classes he took with Patty Dugan as a young boy. He wants to help other children have an artistic outlet the way that he himself did.
How can I get involved?
If you're an adult, teenager, or college student, we're always looking for people to volunteer their time in the studio. You can help teach kids about whatever type of art you feel most comfortable with and get some time to do artwork yourself. Also, we're now offering adult classes if you're interested in teaching or taking one of those in any medium.
What facilities and supplies does Art Haven have?
Art Haven has a fully functioning darkroom (available for classes and open darkroom time), 10 pottery wheels, painting and drawing supplies, a digital lighting studio, Mac computer lab, and the gallery of the Teen Artist Guild. Also in the works is a 4,000 square foot space for high school and adult programming. This new space will include new pottery wheels, a teen class and hangout space, artist studios for rent, an art materials thrift store, and a creative function and workshop space!
Do I need to sign up ahead of time?
Some of our classes require pre-registration, but many are open to walk-ins. Those requiring registration are darkroom photography, youth pottery, adult pottery, and adult open darkroom time. All other classes are open to walk-ins unless the class is full. To be safe, you can always call ahead to check.
Where is Art Haven located?
The studio is located at 180B Main Street in Gloucester, MA, directly across from the police station.
